Formalities at the border crossing
From Poland to Ukraine

Being in Roztocze you ought to visit the area which is located on the other side of the border. You can use the Hrebenne/Rava-Ruska border crossing which lies on the E372 road, an old trade route stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. The current crossing is being upgraded and the new terminal is planned to be completed by summer 2006.You can cross the border by private car, tour coach and service bus, motorbikes and bicycles (only organized groups); you cannot cross the border on foot. The passenger train which used to run from Warsaw to Rava-Ruska has been suspended and is expected to be reinstated only for one season , and then only on the stretch Warsaw-Bełżec. The situation is similar on the Krakowec/Korczowa border crossing on the E40 road. Both these crossings are close to Roztocze. Additionally the frontier crossings at Zosin/Ustilug and Medyka/Mostiska near Przemyśl can be used and indeed there is a pedestrian and railway crossing point at this latter location. But it cannot be recommended for tourists, as the customs clearance on both sides of the border leaves much to be desired.

To cross the border it is necessary to have a passport valid for at least 3 months. Poles and citizens of the European Union and also Canadians currently do not require visas. A visa is obligatory for citizens of other countries, including the USA, and can only be got at Ukrainian diplomatic agencies. The visa can be obtained at the embassy in the country of residence or, after arriving in Poland, at the Ukrainian Embassy in Warsaw or Consulate in Lublin. If driving a car it is essential to have an insurance policy (Green Card) for the former CIS countries, or to buy one at the border crossing. In addition tourists entering Ukrainian territory have to buy medical insurance, so called UKRAINMEDSTRACH at a cost of 12 UAH per person for a 5-day period. (N.B. This insurance isn’t required at every crossing.) However, it is recommended in case of emergency or sudden illness and ensures free medical care.

From Ukraine to Poland:
Cross-border movement follows the same rules. Citizens of Ukraine are obliged to have visa which can be obtained free at diplomatic agencies. There are also travel agencies accredited at consulates or the Embassy of RP which provide a visa for a fee.
