The only cities in the Roztocze area which have a sufficiently fine historic townscape to form a principal destination for tourists are Lvov and Zamość. The rest of the Roztocze towns such as Zhovkva (UA), Tomaszów Lubelski (PL), Szczebrzeszyn (PL), Yavoriv (UA) and Janów Lubelski (PL) are visited just occasionally during excursions to Roztocze and aren’t presented as tourist targets.
Lvov (800,000 residents) is the most important city not only of Roztocze, but also of the whole Western Ukraine. It is situated 60km from the border with Poland at an important road and rail node. There is an airport in Lvov which makes it attractive for travel by plane to Kiev, Moscow, Warsaw, Prague, Rome, and Frankfurt.
Lvov is a thriving scientific, industrial and cultural centre. One of the main sectors of the economy is tourism and Lvov is visited by thousands of people. Many of these are foreigners, including many Poles. One of the most attractive spots is the Old City, which has been included in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List.
