A new field of tourism has been developing during the last few years which is concentrated on making forests more accessible to tourists . A number of educational trails have been established in the state forests in association with the provision of car parks, rest areas and camp sites. The forest has been made more accessible by the establishment of various kinds of accommodation in the form of recreational centres , ecological education centres, hunting lodges and bed and breakfast facilities in Poland.
All of these opportunities have been prepared and introduced in the form of a Forest Tour Guide in the form of a book and on a CD. Additionally this has been placed online (www.lpt2005.pl) Similar types of facilities can be found in Ukraine.
Central and Southern Roztocze is an area covered with enormous areas of forest. In Zwierzyniec commune, for instance, forest takes up as much as 66% of the land surface. The region is therefore especially attractive to lovers of forest, furthermore the vast area of the Puszcza Solska forest wilderness and the Janów Forest adjoin Roztocze. A large proportion of the Roztocze forests are covered by some form of legal protection such as the Roztocze National Park, nature reserves, and landscape parks. Many marked trails, cycle paths, and educational trails run through the forests.
The existence of such a large area of forest encourages local people to go on day outings to pick mushrooms, berries etc.
It should be also noted that hunting and game shooting is very popular in this area. Special facilities have been prepared for foreign tourists in the public forests via a network of hunting accommodation in ranger stations and forester’s and gamekeeper’s lodges. These include facilities in the Zwierzyniec, Józefów, Janów Lubelski and Tomaszów Lubelski forest inspectorates.
